So, it’s my fault. NeoOffice 2.1 was released on Mar 27 but I didn’t know it till yesterday.

But then…it should automatically prompt me to the website for upgrade upon launching the program.

So…it’s back on NeoOffice.

Anyways, why am I talking about this software? Because…ver 2.1 is compatible with M$ Office 2007 and solves the problem of the new format thing.

And the Windows people think that it’s not related to them anyway. Well, there’s a corresponding FREE office program called Open Office (www.openoffice.org) for Windows. This thing is developed by Sun Microsystem. Great company! I love them =P

It happened again…NeoOffice needa be force quited. I was … a bit frustrated.

But this time, I did something before quiting. I took a screen capture and successfully captured an image of nearly a whole page of words.

Force Quit. Relaunch.

So…I hadn’t pressed the save button since right after starting point 5. I have point 7 and 8 in the screen cap image, that means I have two points to fill. Wait…how can two points take up just 3 lines? That doesn’t make sense. Oh…wait! I did type point 5 but…I put the content of point 6 in it. The whole point 5….where is it? No where to be found. Let me read it again…no recollection whatsoever! Hahaha! These things do happen …again and again. I missed one big paragraph again. (hmm…it happened when I as doing my final year project, and when I was translating the first book for this publisher…and am sure it happened in other projects as well. Luckily, I’ve got friends who are willing to proofread my things! Thanks, guys!)

Thank God it crashed!

So blessed I am.

I was doing translation last night. I’d finished almost the whole lesson. I clicked the xx button, yy button, then another button, and yet another click.

Darn! It’s almost right after I clicked the last click I knew I did something terribly wrong. NeoOffice is a good software. It reads MS Office files perfectly (almost) and it works almost exactly the same way as MS Office. Plus, It’s FREE! Good as it is, there are flaws. After being trained so many years on the piano, my fingers work really fast, and I guess too fast for the software to handle. I knew it! If I click too many buttons at the same time, it’d crash. And it did.

Click the Apple on the left top conrner, Force Quit, Force Quit NeoOffice. (Well, works just like alt+ctrl+del in windows.) Relaunch NeoOffice, then file recovery…Great! 1/4 of the work recovered…

It’s almost 5am. Great!

I could actually just go to bed and forget about it and let it wait till today but I was just unwilling to just quit it like that. I did my best to recall what I had just translated and typed the whole thing again.

I finally went to bed at around 6:15am.

(Well, really, don’t blame my beautiful Mac. It’s not her fault but mine.)

(Well, again, alongside with my translation work, I was reading novels and comics…and occassionally searching for things in youtube…plus other things, you know. I’m a multitasker.)

M$ has released a new format in Word 2007 – .docx

Don’t ask me what it really is. I still have no clue. All I know is my mom screamed ‘help!’ (and ‘what the heck’…and so on) when she couldn’t open the word file she saved in the ugly, bulky church computer, which got Word 2007 installed, on my beautiful, slim iMac. Naturally, my sweet iMac became the scapegoat.

Poor iMac. Not her fault! If you bring that .docx file to any other PC that doesn’t run Word 2007, you’ll still get stuck. Well, yea, M$ has offered a compatibility pack for previous Word versions users but some format stuffs will still be lost. And M$ hasn’t released a compatibility pack for oother users.

So, what to do? ‘Now I have to rush back to church office early in the morning to get the file and send it out tomorrow?’ Mom grumbled.

No, no. Well, after searching on the internet, solution is found. Well, not a perfect one but a helpful one. Thanks to all the people out there who know way better than me. The .docx is a xml format (don’t ask me what it exactly means, I have no clue) and is actually a zipped thing. So, on the mac, I can’t retain the format but I can retain the text. Only three steps have to be taken:

1) change the extension from .docx to .zip

2) unzip the file

3) under the unzipped file directory, go to ‘Word’ folder and open ‘document.xml’ with Safari.

Then you’ll get the text out. Remember to open it with Safari. Somehow, without specific instruction, my iMac automatically chose to open it with … Big-Bang-4-in-a-Row. God knows why it chooses a game app out of all other choices!

But the best way to avoid the hassle is: always save your Word file in a lower version previous to 2007. Remember: anything newly launched by M$ is unsafe to be used. Stay clear!

I didn’t buy that many tickets this year – only 5: Yuri Simanov with Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra (and pianist Konstantin Lifschitz), Propeller (12th Night), Great Mass by Leipzig Ballet, Julia Migenes (Alter Ego), and Soweto Gospel Choir.

The Moscow Philharmonic was good. Yuri Simanov’s conducting was impressive. The concert was opened with a splendidly played Shostakovich overture but no more surprise afterwards. As for the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2 played by Konstantin Lifshitz…well, I couldn’t feel the power. I even fell asleep for a few seconds in the slow movement. I’m not sure if it’s the hall (well, the concert hall in Cultural Centre should be demolished! Such a waste!) or the pianist to blame. But since the hall is bad anyways, let’s blame the hall. The best part of this concert was that they played 4 encore pieces making the encore part almost as long as the program itself. The concert started at around 8:10pm and ended at almost 11pm.

I must admit that I’m not a big fan of Shakespeare’s and I didn’t study English Literature when I was in school. I’ve only watched one Shakespeare play before – Tempest by AandBC Theatre Company and it was a wonderful experience. Watching 12th Night by Propeller was also a wonderful experience…not in the same way though. Tempest is neither a tragedy nor a comedy. It’s a romance. 12th Night is a comedy and that night I watched 12th Night was indeed filled with joy and laughters. It’s really…just hilarious to see guys playing the female roles. Imagine you see a person who’s so obviously a guy wearing a shimmering silver deep-V neck gown to play the role of Olivier, then another obviously male person play the role of Maria in a petit black and a pair of high heels. In one particular scene, ‘she’ sat down and put one leg on a chair (or a box…whatever) and caress his leg. It’s just hilarious. I know some people may find it disrespectful to Shakespeare but I found that play really kinda “-like". Well, I guess Shakespeare, like , didn’t aim at becoming a great writer (play-wright) but really just to make a living. I don’t know but it was fun.

Great Mass by Leipzig Ballet was…ok. It was the most pricy one on the list (and the whole festival) with the top price at $1200. I guess the money was justified as it’s really a big production involving three parties: the ballet company, the orchestra, and the choir, plus 4 vocal soloists. I’m not a dancer so I can’t really comment on the choreography or the dance itself but from a general public point of view, I’d say it’s beautiful. The orchestra was good. The soloists…well, they’re good except the soprano was constantly flat on the Es (one octave above middle C). The only thing that I don’t like was the inclusion of those poems. I couldn’t see how they fit into Mozart’s Great Mass. Perhaps it’s my lack of appreciation for literature. I don’t know.

Julia Migenes is indeed a very good singer – both as a jazz singer and an opera singer. Her voice is just superb…but the songs that night wasn’t really the kind of jazz I like so…well, I really adore her voice (and the two musicians and the young dancer as well) but I didn’t really like the songs. Nevertheless, I bought the CD.

Soweto Gospel Choir was the last program I went to and it was just GREAT! It’s really uplifting. I enjoyed every moment of that concert. They’re just great. The only ‘regret’ was that the Hong Kong audience were a bit timid – while the choir was singing, dancing, clapping on the stage, hardly anyone clapped in the stall (I was sitting in the stall. I was told that many got up and danced along in the balcony area). They didn’t get up to their feet until the encore session.

That’s all for this year. Money well spent.
