How can plastic box be environmental friendly?

1) It can be reused;

2) You WANT to reuse it.

I’m talking about this little plastic box from Hung Fook Tong:

I bought these two little boxes of snacks at $21 for two. It may sound a bit pricey but then it’s actually just about the same price at 優之良品. Let’s take a closer look at the box:

See the two small tabs there? You may think it’s for lifting the lid but no, they’re not for that…

They’re for pulling off the seal and this seal is the only non-reusable part of the box. If someone can think of how to reuse it, let me know.

Here comes the part that makes me think: I MUST reuse this box –

No, not the label… See the stripe near at the edge on the right?

It’s a drawer for holding picks. Those two nice picks can be reused if you use them carefully and wash them afterwards.

Now I just hope that they’d take one more step and re-design the bottle for their drinks. It doesn’t have to be a bottle, I mean. HFT can collect 龜靈膏boxes because these boxes are like bowls, which means they can be cleaned and sterilized easier. Bottles are not. Think about it… even if they do reuse plastic bottles – collect them, sterilize them, reuse them… do you wanna drink from it? I don’t.

Buying my friend and my cousin a lunch. My friend suggested Munch, I said why not try another one. Then we went to 798 where I’ve enjoyed semi-buffet lunch before. As we arrived there, we saw that it’s no longer servingsemi-buffet lunch but instead a $98 all-you-can-eat lunch. There’re altogether, maybe, 40 dishes including appetizers, main dish (mini size) and desserts. There’re more desserts on menu than the other two though. The miniature main dishes allowed us to try out most of the dishes on menu. Desserts were particularly good and we all ended up REALLY full. The only complaint is that food don’t always come as we’ve ordered. But we didn’t care much about that. It’s an “all-you-can-eat" anyway.

今晚還吃了過早上桌而涼掉的蒸饅頭(好吧,我們硬是要等其他菜才吃饅頭,是我們不對…);
還有鱔肉新鮮但翠瓜有苦味的鱔糊炒翠瓜;

Airport Express

Airport Express

Had lunch with a friend at Cova in Harbor City the other day. The food was alright. Well, I ate too much the night before and was still a bit full by the time I had lunch the next day. So, I wasn’t really paying too much attention to the food. But it certainly was not bad at all.

During that lunch, we heard a guy from the table behind asking a server if there’s a menu in Chinese, and the server coldly replied, “NO."

The immediate reaction of mine and my friend’s was bursted into giggles. But then, both of us thought it’s actually not quite right.

Just imagine yourself being in New York, walk into a restaurant and you open the menu and find that it’s not written in English. Won’t you find it odd?

This is Hong Kong. Isn’t it? And Chinese IS our language. Right? Chinese IS our official language. Why the server could reply with a ‘No’ as if it is absolutely right to be so and that it’s the guy’s fault to ask for a Chinese menu?

Of course, we understand that the logic behind is people who speak English in Hong Kong are those who are better educated and may spend more. However, isn’t this just pure discrimination to those who are not so good at English? Even if it were true that English speakers are those who may spend more, why isn’t Cova treating the customers with less money in the same manner? Did they assume that Chinese speakers, who they believe to be poorer, would not pay the bill after the meal?

Just what if a customer ordered and ate something that he/she is allergic to because there’s no Chinese menu and thus got severely sick? The customer may sue Cova of negligence. As Chinese is an official language in Hong Kong, it is a reasonable expectation of the customer to have Chinese menu in restaurants in Hong Kong – no matter what kind of restaurant it is.

Not that many people would bluntly admit that they discriminate Chinese speakers. Not that many companies/restaurants/organizations would openly confess that they discriminate customers who speak Chinese only. Nonetheless, subtly many are doing just that.

A small town in UK started the fair-trade campaign. The campaign aims at treating the primary producers (farmers) fairly – paying them what they deserve without exploiting them.

Hong Kong needs a different kind of fair-trade – to treat customers, both English speakers and Chinese speakers, alike; Serve them fairly without discriminating them and exploiting their rights to know what they are spending on.

Did my friend a favor some time ago and so he bought me a dinner the other evening at Shakey’s @ NTP…

It’s good… especially it’s paid by someone else!

Grande Maison means Big Home/House in French but this Grand Maison is not big at all.

It’s always hard to find a place for lunch on Sunday in TST. It’s hard not because there is no choice but quite the contrary, there are too many choices. And as we were walking along Ashley Road last Sunday and was trying to pick one of the many restaurants there, we saw this blackboard menu at the entrance of this narrow building on the street. The price for set lunch there is around $60, which is not expensive but not cheap either. But then we noticed that there’s no service charge and it’s giving a 20% off discount. And it’s on the first floor of the building. And my friend said she had tried it with her colleagues and it’s good.

So we went up stairs to this Grand Maison on the first floor. As we stepped inside, my friend exclaimed, “oh no, this is not the one I tried!" The waitress heard it and, quite surprisingly, instead of persuading me to stay, she asked which type of cuisine we’re looking for and wanted to help us to find the one we had in mind. But we stayed anyway.

The set lunch includes soup, a main dish, a dessert, and a cup of coffee/tea. My friend chose cream soup and I chose vegetable soup. The soup is ok…not bad but nothing special either. For main dish, my friend chose chicken fillet with pasta in white wine sauce while I chose lamb chop with veg and potato in black pepper sauce. We both though that with that price ($52-60), we can’t expect much but it’s good. Honestly, it’s beyond our expectation.  It’s as good as those offered in restaurants that would cost us over $70 (less service charge). We got the same dessert as there’s no choice. It’s dessert of the day – black currant blancmange. Pretty good as well, at least the display is good even if one doesn’t like dessert at all. My friend chose to have tea but I chose to have coffee as I usually do. My friend thought the tea to be too bitter and asked if it’s ok to have it replaced. The waitress happily replaced it with another one, which fits my friend’s taste buds perfectly. My coffee was… not bad but not exactly the kind I like. Well, let’s say it’s just ordinary house coffee.

The bill was $95… for two sets. I “generously" laid a $100 banknote and told the waitress no need to change. Must say that it’s sooo much better than the $70 lunch we had a couple weeks ago in another cafe round the corner. And yet, it’s so much cheaper. I can see myself coming back to this restaurant again… even if it doesn’t offer discount anymore.
